12 June 2026, CANBERRA - The Philippine Embassy in Canberra, led by Ambassador Antonio Morales, commemorated the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and the 165th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal on 12 June 2026, bringing together more than 150 distinguished guests and members of the Filipino-Australian community in a celebration of freedom, history, and national identity.

Among those in attendance were H.E. Ernesto De Leon, former Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Judge Raul Pangalangan, former Judge of the International Criminal Court, representatives of the Knights of Rizal and Kababaihang Rizalista Inc.-Canberra Chapter, defence officers and cadets; and members of the Filipino-Australian community.

The commemoration began with a flag-raising ceremony led by Filipino cadets from the Australian Defence Force Academy, followed by a wreath-laying and flower-offering ceremony by members of the community. The official program was subsequently held at the Official Residence.

In his remarks, Ambassador Morales highlighted the multi-year theme, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” and stated that Philippine freedom was won through sacrifice, that its history continues to shape the nation’s identity and that the future depends on choices made in the present. The Ambassador further emphasized the shared values of freedom and democracy that underpin the relationship between the Philippines and Australia. As both countries celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations this year, he expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to deepen and thanked the Filipino community for its important role in strengthening bilateral ties. He also invited attendees to observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the recent earthquake in Mindanao.

In his message, Sir Thomas Baena, Regional Commander of the Knights of Rizal for Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania (ANZO), spoke about the organization’s efforts to promote the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal. He also highlighted Australia’s contributions to the defense of the Philippines during the Second World War.

Sir Norman Kalagayan, Chapter Head and Knight Commander of Rizal in Canberra and President of the Filipino Community Council in the ACT (FCCACT), underscored the importance of solidarity and mutual support within the community. He likewise highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the FCCACT to assist victims of the earthquake in Mindanao.

Lady Evanor Palac McMiken, President of Kababaihang Rizalista Inc. – Canberra Chapter, reflected on the enduring lessons from Rizal’s life and encouraged Filipinos to embody his values in fostering national identity and civic responsibility. She noted that Rizal’s contributions extended beyond literature and nationalism to fields such as engineering, medicine, and community development, and echoed his call for active civic engagement.

The program also featured video messages from Philippine leaders.

In his message, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated that “it is incumbent upon the present generation to carry forward the duty of building a nation where justice, dignity, and opportunity are a daily inheritance of every Filipino.”

Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac of the Department of Migrant Workers emphasized that true freedom means giving every Filipino “the chance to live with dignity, work with purpose, and dream without fear.”

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, whose message was delivered by Consul General Sheila Tario, emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the Philippines’ history while strengthening global partnerships. She urged Filipinos to lead with the same courage and determination as their forefathers to advance national interests and benefit future generations.

Following the official program, guests enjoyed a traditional Filipino luncheon that provided an opportunity for fellowship and community engagement. The luncheon featured a selection of Filipino favorites, including silog, (a classic Filipino breakfast meal consisting of garlic fried rice and eggs), beef tapa (pan-fried marinated beef), longganisa (sweet and savory Filipino-style sausage); ensaladang talong (grilled eggplant salad with capsicum, tomatoes, and parsley) and puto (sweet steamed rice cake).
