13 June 2026, GRANVILLE, NEW SOUTH WALES – Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio A. Morales joined the Philippine Australian Multicultural Association, Inc. (PAMAI) led by its President, Ms. Ronna Guzman, and members of the Filipino community at Pista sa Nayon 2026 held at The Granville Centre in Granville, New South Wales, in celebration of the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. The event, held under the theme “Ating Pangalagaan: Bayan, Kalayaan at Kaunlaran,” also formed part of the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.
In his remarks, Ambassador Morales underscored the continuing significance of Philippine independence and its relevance to Filipinos overseas. He noted that more than 400,000 people of Filipino heritage now call Australia home, making Filipinos the country’s fifth-largest migrant community. The Ambassador recognized the meaningful contributions of Filipino-Australians across many professions and sectors while maintaining close ties with the Philippines.
Ambassador Morales also reflected on the longstanding history of Filipinos in Australia, including the contributions of Filipino pearl divers or the “Manilamen” in northern Australia. He highlighted the various activities undertaken by Philippine Posts across Australia to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of diplomatic relations, including the Philippines–Australia Friendship Day reception at Parliament House in Canberra and commemorative engagements in Perth, Broome, Brisbane, and New South Wales.
The event was attended by Ms. Julia Finn MP, Parliamentary Secretary representing the Premier of New South Wales and the Minister for Multiculturalism. The program featured multicultural performances, cultural presentations, community games, and a ceremonial toast celebrating 80 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia. END
