14 June 2026, WAGGA WAGGA, NEW SOUTH WALES – Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio A. Morales joined the Filipino Community of Wagga Wagga (FilCom Wagga), led by its President, Ms. Annabelle Regalado Borja, and members of the Filipino community in commemorating the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence at the CSU Riverina Playhouse in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. The event formed part of nationwide celebrations marking Philippine Independence and the 80th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.

In his keynote remarks, Ambassador Morales highlighted this year’s Independence Day theme, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.”, emphasizing that freedom carries a continuing responsibility to contribute meaningfully to society and help shape a better future. He recognized the important role of Filipinos in regional Australia and encouraged members of the community to apply their professional skills and expertise in ways that contribute to both the Philippines and Australia.

The Ambassador paid tribute to the growing Filipino community in Wagga Wagga and the wider Riverina-Murray region, whose members have earned the respect of their adopted communities through their work and service. He recognized the contributions of Filipinos across various professions, including healthcare workers, educators, mechanics, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders, whose efforts continue to enrich regional New South Wales while maintaining close ties with the Philippines.

Ambassador Morales also acknowledged the presence of distinguished federal and local leaders, including Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, Mayor Dallas Tout of Wagga Wagga, Ms. Belinda Crain, CEO of Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, and Councillor Karissa Subedi, whom he recognized as the first Filipino councillor in the Riverina-Murray region. The Ambassador noted that Councillor Subedi’s achievement reflects the growing contribution of Filipinos to civic and public life in regional Australia.

The celebration featured cultural performances by Filipino youth and community groups from Wagga Wagga, Griffith, and Albury-Wodonga, as well as Filipino food stalls and fellowship activities showcasing Filipino culture and heritage in regional New South Wales. Ambassador Morales expressed appreciation to FilCom Wagga for its continued efforts to sustain Filipino identity and strengthen community ties in the Riverina-Murray region. - END -
