15 June 2026, BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND – Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio A. Morales joined Queensland Premier David Crisafulli MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick MP, Queensland Minister Fiona Simpson MP, members of the Queensland Parliament, and leaders of the Filipino-Australian community at the Independence Day Gala of the Philippine Consulate in Queensland held at the Queensland Parliament House in Brisbane. The event commemorated the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and the 80th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.
In their remarks, Premier Crisafulli, Speaker Dick, and other Australian dignitaries paid tribute to the contributions of Australians of Filipino heritage to Queensland and Australian society. They recognized the Filipino community’s important role across sectors, while highlighting the values of hard work, family, and service that continue to strengthen Australia’s multicultural society.
In his diplomatic address, Ambassador Morales highlighted the growing Philippines–Australia Strategic Partnership as both countries commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations. He underscored expanding cooperation in areas such as defense, maritime security, and climate resilience, while recognizing the important role of the more than 400,000-strong Filipino-Australian community in strengthening bilateral ties.
A key highlight of the evening was the formal launch of the Parliamentary Friends of the Philippines in Queensland, which was co-chaired by Mr. Rob Molhoek MP and Mr. Peter Russo MP. Ambassador Morales described the launch of the Friends group as an important initiative to deepen parliamentary engagement and strengthen cooperation across diplomatic, cultural, and economic areas.
The gala also featured a Queensland–Philippines Community Recognition Ceremony, during which Premier David Crisafulli MP, Ambassador Morales, and Honorary Consul Atty. Sheryll Gabutero presented plaques and certificates recognizing the longstanding contributions of Filipino community organizations and outstanding individuals in Queensland.
Ambassador Morales likewise expressed appreciation to the Honorary Consul of the Philippines in Queensland Atty. Sheryll Gabutero and the Philippine Consulate Queensland for organizing the gala and for their continued efforts to strengthen engagement between the Philippines and Queensland while supporting the Filipino community in the state.
Held at the historic Premier’s and Speaker’s Halls of Queensland Parliament House, the gala featured cultural performances, Filipino music, and community recognition activities celebrating the longstanding friendship between the Philippines and Australia. - END
