22 April 2026, MELBOURNE - Ambassador Antonio Morales has highlighted the growing depth and future direction of Philippines-Australia relations in a recent interview with The Philippine Times, as both nations mark the 80th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year.

Reflecting on this milestone, Ambassador Morales underscored the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship and its continued evolution in response to global challenges. He pointed to the Philippines’ chairship of ASEAN under the theme “Navigating the Future Together,” which prioritizes cooperation in maritime security, climate action, and increasingly, energy security.

Amid a shifting global landscape, the Ambassador stressed the importance of collaboration. He noted the strong and expanding defence and strategic ties between the Philippines and Australia, including the landmark visit of BRP Diego Silang – the first-ever Philippine Navy vessel to visit Australia – as well as ongoing joint military exercises and established dialogue mechanisms.

Economic engagement remains another key priority. Ambassador Morales acknowledged that while Australia is currently the Philippines’ 15th largest trading partner, there is significant potential to deepen two-way trade and investment.

Looking to the Filipino community, particularly younger generations in Australia, he offered a message to embrace their heritage and showcase their Filipino heritage in this multicultural Australia.

As part of the Friendship Day celebration in May, five prominent Canberra landmarks: the National Carillon, John Gorton Building, Treasury Building, Questacon, and the National Library, will be illuminated in the colors of the Philippine flag on the evening of 21 May 2026.

The Embassy invites the public to share their photos of the illuminated landmarks using the hashtag #PHAU80YEARS
