20 June 2026, Canberra – Ambassador Antonio Morales joined the Filipino Community Council of the ACT (FCCACT), Canberra’s umbrella organization for Filipino community groups, in commemorating the 128th anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence during a gala ball organized by the Council. Mr. David Smith MP, Federal Member for Bean, also joined the event.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Morales commended the Filipino-Australian community for continuing to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines and praised their active civic participation and economic contributions. He noted that commitment to celebrating their heritage reflects an enduring affection for the Philippines. The Ambassador stated that the celebration also holds special meaning as it aligns with the 80th year of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia.
Mr. David Smith MP also addressed the gathering, noting that the community in Canberra effectively preserves the legacy of its forebears through vibrant cultural events and active roles across various sectors of society. He highlighted that by maintaining their heritage, Filipino-Australians significantly enrich the social and cultural fabric of the capital.
FCCACT President Mr. Norman Kalagayan emphasized the strengthening ties between the Philippines and Australia and the role of the Filipino community in advancing cooperation. He also announced that the celebration’s proceeds would be dedicated to FCCACT’s outreach programs supporting victims of the recent Mindanao Earthquake.
The formal segment concluded with Ambassador Morales and Mr. David Smith MP leading a toast to the Philippines and Australia. The event transitioned into an evening of community engagement, featuring a variety of dance and musical performances by local Filipino-Australian artists. - END
