15 September 2026, HOBART – Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio Morales and Consul General Jesus Gary Domingo of the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne met with Tasmania’s Office of the Coordinator-General (OCG) and Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania (ReCFIT) to explore opportunities for greater trade, investment and cooperation.
OCG Assistant Director Andrew Crane highlighted opportunities across aquaculture, maritime engineering, hydrogen, agribusiness and tourism. Tasmania’s strong agricultural sector is exploring growing new crop varieties, protein production and technology-driven innovation to improve productivity and address global food security challenges.
ReCFIT provided a briefing on Tasmania’s renewable energy sector and its experience in developing hydro and other renewable energy resources. Tasmania reached 100% renewable electricity self-sufficiency in 2020 and has a legislated target to produce 21,000 GW hours of renewable electricity by 2040, which is equivalent to 200% of its 2020 electricity demand.
Ambassador Morales highlighted the growing Philippine investment presence in Tasmania, including ACEN’s Jim’s Plain and Robbins Island renewable energy projects, and expressed interest in learning from Tasmania’s experience in renewable energy development, energy generation, storage and grid integration.
He also encouraged Tasmanian advanced manufacturing and technology companies to explore investment opportunities in the Philippines, including through the Luzon Economic Corridor, which is supporting investment for resilient supply chains, critical minerals and downstream processing, renewable energy and storage, batteries and electric vehicles, semiconductors and electronics, industrial technology and logistics.
Consul General Domingo underscored opportunities to deepen maritime cooperation through engagement with the Australian Maritime College and welcomed further exchanges between Philippine and Tasmanian energy stakeholders.
Renewable energy is a key area of cooperation under the Philippines-Australia Strategic Partnership and is also identified as a priority sector under Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, which recognizes the significant opportunities for Australian expertise, technology and investment to support the Philippines’ green energy transition for a cleaner future. - END
