21 April 2026, MELBOURNE - Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio Morales called on Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria, at Government House in Melbourne.
Ambassador Morales underscored the significance of the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership in 2023. He also recalled President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s successive visits to Australia in 2024, including the Guest of Government Visit in February where the President became the first Filipino head of state to address the Australian Parliament, and his participation in the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit held in Melbourne in March 2024.
The Ambassador noted that the Philippines and Australia are celebrating 80 years of diplomatic relations this year, with foundations forged during the Second World War. He highlighted that this shared history continues to shape a strong and resilient partnership grounded in democratic values, the rule of law and support for an open, rules-based international order.
He also acknowledged historical links commemorated in Melbourne, including the permanent marker at the Shrine of Remembrance honouring Allied forces, among them Filipino troops, who fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. The plaque recognizes the joint service of Filipino and Australian forces in the largest naval battle in history and a decisive moment in the liberation of the Philippines.
Ambassador Morales noted Victoria’s standing as Australia’s “education state” and discussed with Governor Gardner opportunities to further deepen collaboration in higher education, STEM, and research. They expressed interest in expanding academic linkages and strengthening innovation-driven partnerships between Philippine and Victorian institutions.
Governor Gardner also acknowledged the important contributions of the Filipino community and stated that their strong presence across key sectors enriches Victoria’s multicultural landscape.
With a population of over 408,000, Filipinos and Australians of Filipino descent form the fifth-largest migrant community in Australia. Victoria is home to the second-largest concentration, with more than 95,000 people of Filipino ancestry, including over 68,000 who were born in the Philippines. - END
