24 August 2026, PERTH — Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio A. Morales met with Most Rev. Bishop Nelson Po to discuss the Filipino community in Western Australia (WA), including its contributions, challenges, and the important role of the Catholic Church in supporting Filipinos and their families.

Bishop Po was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Perth by Pope Leo XIV on 2 February 2026 and ordained a bishop on 16 April 2026. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Perth in 2005 and is the second bishop of Filipino descent in Australia.

Ambassador Morales and Bishop Po exchanged views on the experiences of Filipinos in WA and ways to strengthen support for community members. They also discussed the continuing growth of the Filipino community in the State. They both recognized the achievements of Filipinos in WA and their contributions to the State’s economy and vibrant community.

The Ambassador highlighted the long-standing connection between Filipinos and WA, recalling the Manilamen who came to Broome and other parts of northern Australia to work in the pearling industry in the 1800s. He noted that, beyond their work in the industry, these early Filipino migrants brought their culture, traditions, food, and Catholic faith, which continue to be reflected in Broome today.

Bishop Po highlighted the significant contribution of Filipino priests serving in WA, who provide pastoral care and spiritual support to Filipino communities. He shared that there are currently more than 10 priests of Filipino descent serving across the State.

Ambassador Morales expressed appreciation for the Catholic Church’s continuing support for Filipinos in WA and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among the Embassy, the Honorary Consulate in Perth, the Filipino community, and faith-based organizations to promote their welfare and well-being.
