Canberra, 23 January 2012 – Philippine Ambassador to Australia Belen F. Anota echoed the praise of Malacanang Palace and the Department of Foreign Affairs for the “bayanihan” or community spirit displayed by the Filipino crew members of the ill-fated luxury liner “Costa Concordia.”
"It is but apt that President Benigno S. Aquino has dubbed the Filipino crew members of the Costa Concordia as our ‘sailing ambassadors’ because of the professionalism, courage, heroism and selflessness that they have demonstrated. They have brought out the best traits of the Filipino,” Ambassador Anota said.
When the ship began to list after running aground, Filipino crew members continued to help others even at the risk of their own safety.
There were a total of 296 Filipino crew members on the Costa Concordia.
On Thursday, a first batch of 100 crew members from the ill-fated luxury liner returned to Philippines. Another batch of 21 arrived in Manila before noon Friday. The bulk of the seafarers returned to the country on Saturday.
The Department of Labor and Employment assured returning crew members that assistance packages are available for them, especially those involved in extraordinary circumstances.

My warmest greetings to all the Filipinos around the world, as we commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the People Power Revolution.
We Filipinos continue to demonstrate the same ideals of unity and patriotism that freed us from oppression 25 years ago. These values embody our determination to tackle the challenges of today. Thus, this celebration is not only a day to remember, but also to affirm our duty to our fellow Filipinos and to our country. I am grateful for our countrymen abroad who have been keenly following the course of our country's progress and have remained proud of our multifaceted heritage, which defines our identity as one people. Now that we are in a period of transformation, let us keep alive the spirit of People Power and democracy, as we work together and fulfill our aspiration of a peaceful and progressive Phillipines.
We are moving forward in this era of daylight and hope, and it is incumbent upon each of us to take on the responsibility of realizing our dreams for our beloved country on the straight and righteous path to change.

Over 700 Serviced During Perth Mobile Consular Mission |
|
|
|
|
The Philippine Embassy’s Mobile Consular Team was able to successfully service 720 ePassport applicants during its consular mission conducted in Perth, Western Australia on 9 – 10 December 2011.
Initially, the expected number of applicants numbered around 300 but more than double that figure showed up for the weekend outreach. This was the highest recorded number of ePassport applications serviced by the Philippine Embassy in Australia this year.
Through the Mobile Mission, the Embassy was able to service those who were affected by the cut-off in the issuance of machine-readable passports (MRP) and the consequent full implementation of the Philippine ePassport last year.
The conduct of the mobile mission spared the passport applicants from having to travel to the Philippine Canberra since the ePassport system requires personal appearance of applicants for photo and fingerprint capture.
Aside from processing of passport applications, the consular team also administered the oath of allegiance to 36 Filipino dual citizens and accommodated applications for report of birth and report of marriage.
The four-man Mobile Team was composed of Administrative Officer Carlo Estole and Consular Assistants Ronaldo Pilapil, Joel Bulos and Ricardo Antipolo. Mr. Gerald Donnelly, Philippine Honorary Consul General in Perth and members of the Filipino community extended invaluable assistance to the team.
The consular mission to Perth was the fourth conducted by the Embassy this year. Earlier, mobile teams were dispatched to Toowomba and Brisbane in Queensland in March, Alice Springs and Darwin in the Northern Territory in May and Melbourne in Victoria in July. |

M E S S A G E
Christmas is a time to pause, reflect, and refocus on the true essentials of life. It is a place we all seek to go back to and recapture childhood's magic and the bounty of everyday miracles.
Christmas allows us to remember - the birth of Christ with its message of love and hope, the journey of mary and joseph and its story of humility and sacrifice, the magi's quest and its lesson in faith and courage.
The Department of Foreign affairs is one with the entire nation and Filipinos all over the world in celebrating this wondrous occasion.
The passing year rained extraordinary challenges. Succeeding waves of high-impact global events, from the Arab Spring to the economic and debt crisis, and the Philippines' adept response, underscore our resilience as a nation.
In the spirit of genuine public service, the men and women of the Department marched through the storms with dedication, commitment, and fortitude. Looking back, we see how much we have achieved by being true to our duties and responsibilities. Throughout the year, we remained steadfast, hopeful and optimistic with the victories we gained.
To everyone in the Department, each step we take forward is the perfect opportunity to do more, serve better, and reach beyond our grasp.
Together with all Department personnel in the Home Office, Regional Consular Offices, embassies, consulates, and missions abroad, I wish every Filipino peace and prosperity.
May the spirit of Christmas further unite our nation and may our collective faith as a people usher in a brighter future.
